Coastal Plains League
The Asheboro Copperheads after getting off to a slow start after the All-Star game, have seem to have found their grove again. The Copperheads lost their first two after the break, but have won three in a row since then. They beat Fayetteville in a close one Thursday night 9-7, then beat Florence Friday night 11-7, finishing off the weekend beating Holly Springs 4-2 on Saturday. The Copperheads will be traveling to Martinsville on Monday, before returning back home to play the Hi-Toms on Tuesday.
Carolina-Virginia League
The Deep River Muddogs have had a busy week and weekend to say the least, playing 5 games in just 4 days. They lost 5-0 to Kernersville on Thursday , then lost to Montreat 8-2 on Saturday, before beating Montreat 10-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. On Sunday the Muddogs played another doubleheader against Roanoke at Salem Stadium. Deep River lost the first game 8-4 and then won the second game 6-1. The Muddogs will play at home Tuesday against Kernersville, game time 7 pm.
American Legion Area III
Randolph County Post 45 and Eastern Randolph Post 81 faced off this weekend, to see who would reach the state playoffs. This is a best of three series that started Saturday. Post 45 was down 5-3 going into the ninth, before putting up 7 runs in the ninth. Post 81 was shutout in their at bat, as Post 45 holds on for the wins 10-5. In game two on Sunday, Post 81 wins a close one 8-5. That even the series at one game a piece. Game three will be Monday evening in Ramseur.
High School
The great career of Southwestern star player Kaila Craven, has one more HS basketball game. Craven was selected for the East-West All-Star game to be played at the Greensboro Coliseum. These players are the best of the best in North Carolina. Craven ended her HS career with 2,377 points. That is 14th all-time in NC women's basketball for a five person team (Sally Reid of Fred T Foard played on a 5 player and 6 player team). What is even more impressive is the players names she is associated with. In the top 15 along with Craven, are ladies that have played at NC State, UNC, Vanderbilt & even UConn to name a few. Not to mention a couple players even played in the WNBA. Craven is the all-time leading scorer at Southwestern Randolph, in Randolph County, the Mid Piedmont Conference and as we mentioned earlier 14th overall in the state. What an impressive resume. The Randolph County community is very proud of your accomplishments. The East-West game will be played Monday July 20th at the Greensboro Coliseum, game time 630 pm.
High school summer football practice will be taking off the week off this week, while the coaches will be attending the NC Coaches
Clinic. Practice will resume back on Monday June 27th. Please check with your players school, for practice times.
Pro Sports
The Open kicked off Thursday morning at the majestic, St Andrews. With the odds on favorite being Jordan Speith. Speith had won the last two majors & was looking to make it 3 in a row. However, the rest of the world was going to have something to say about it. Especially Marc Leishman from Australia and Zach Johnson from the USA, who both shot a final round 66. Even though Johnson the former Masters champion teed off a little earlier than the final few groups, he made the most of his round. Johnson birdied the 18th hole to finish his final round 66, to get to -15 for the tournament. Very impressive to say the least at St. Andrews. But the 21 year old Speith from Texas kept making magic happen, as he birdies the tough 16th on about a 30' putt to move to -15 in a tie with Johnson and Leishman. With both Johnson and Leishman in the clubhouse and two holes to play, it was all up to Speith. Unfortunately, Speith's Achilles heel this year has been putts inside 10' and it happened again. Speith bogeys 17 on a putt inside 10' and his day was done. So with two players in the club house, only one player had a chance to go into a playoff with them and that was Louis Oosthuizen. Sure enough, Oosthuizen from South Africa and the 2010 Open Champion, birdied the 18th. It would be a three man playoff between the three men, with an aggregate 4 hole playoff. When it was all said and done, Zach Johnson put the pedal down in the playoffs and wins the 144th Open Championship. Louis Oosthuizen finished second, with Marc Leishman finishing third.
In the Web.com Tour, Asheboro's Dustin Bray finished 37 overall out of a field of 75 that qualified at the Stonbrae Classic in Hayward, CA. Bray made the Web.com Tour this year after qualifying from Q School and has made the cut in 4 out of his last 5 tournaments. The Web.com Tour takes this weekend off, before traveling to Lehi, Utah for the Utah Championship July 30-August 2nd.
